Newland House Sunroom
The room that you are looking at is the sunroom
and was not part of the original 1898 house. This was added in
1915 when one of Mary Newland's daughters became ill after an
operation in the house by the local doctor and the doctor advised
the family that a warm room was needed to bring her health back
and so this room was built.
When this room was constructed, wicker and Mission
oak furniture were popular and this is the way the historical
society has restored this room.
At one time Mary Newland collected native American
handicrafts and the house was full of these pieces including
over 200 baskets of which a few are shown in this room. Some
of the others are on loan to Bowers Museum in Santa Ana for display.
Note the white wicker rocker in the center
of the picture and the Mission oak lamp on the left.

At the desk in the bottom picture is where Mary
Newland kept the books for the ranch and her ledger is shown
open and waiting for the next entry.
