COSTA MESA...Arbor Day is a day of observance that celebrates the planting, maintenance and preservation of trees.
Cities and local communities around the world have been gathering for centuries to plant trees in honor of this day.
The first Arbor Day in America was originated by J. Sterling Morton. On April 10, 1872, he organized the planting of approximately one million trees in his home state of Nebraska.
The City of Costa Mesa continues these efforts by holding an Annual Arbor Day tree planting event. This year, the event was held at Wilson Park on Saturday, April 18.
A volunteer group was led by City Arborist Valente Martinez, Arts Commission Chair Alisa Ochoa, and Planning Commissioners David Martinez and Angely Andrade Vallarta.
They planted 30 trees throughout the park, while city contractors and staff planted an additional 53 trees at several other parks throughout the City.
These trees will provide shade, vital habitat for birds, as well as remove carbon dioxide from the air for generations to come.
The City of Costa Mesa is honored to be designated as a “Tree City USA” aspiring to every endeavor in promoting trees and improving the quality of life throughout the City.
