HUNTINGTON BEACH...Saturday morning was not the best time to hold a garage sale as rain clouds were on the horizon. But the chance of rain did not deter some residents at Old World Village from holding their rainy day sale.

Cyndie and Ronin Kasko

Items of every kind were available for sale including baby items, china, figurines, clothing, computer items, tools and even Ronin's special rock. Into the sale the sky opened up with a brief shower, but but was with them as the rest of the day was dry. Even the cold wind that blew Saturday did not prevent people from checking out the bargins.

HUNTINGTON BEACH...Shades Restaurant & Bar at The Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort is continuing their special $30 prix fixe menu to be offered each month on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in additional to their regular menu. March will offer the “Green Options” menu, with every ingredient on the menu being sourced from organic or sustainable farms. The Green Options Menu will start with roasted organic vegetable panzanella salad, with basil and red wine vinegar, followed by free range lamb chops, white beans with roasted Roma tomatoes and rosemary, and a vanilla panna cota with organic berries and pistachio biscotti for dessert. Shades is located in The Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort at 21100 Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, CA (92648).

HUNTINGTON BEACH...Nilda Patino de Berndt received February's Mayor’s Award. Nilda started working for the Huntington Beach police department on February 19, 2008. She supervises the operations of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) and the police department Neighborhood Watch Program.

In the past year, in addition to her normal duties, she has coordinated: a Curb Crime program which reminds shoppers and visitors to secure their vehicles and belongings; the National Night Out which works in conjunction with Target Department Store; the Fourth of July Parade participation by the RSVP, VIPS and Neighborhood Watch Board; and, the first RSVP academy in five years with 20 new graduates joining the program.

The RSVP and VIPS work in a variety of assignments around the police department including the front desk, investigations, sub-stations, patrol vehicle calibrations, special investigations, traffic hearings, sign removal and parking enforcement.

This past year the Neighborhood Watch Board members conducted approximately 24 Neighborhood Watch Block meetings and the Neighborhood Watch volunteers assist in the distribution of about 14,000 newsletters per month, and have now passed the ONE MILLION mark for total newsletter distribution.

Nilda is shown receiving the award at the City Council meeting. She was joined by Mayor Cathy Green, Police Chief Ken Small, family members and fellow staff members.

HUNTINGTON BEACH...Construction will begin shortly on a new traffic signal at Newland Street and Hamilton Avenue. The intersection of Newland Street and Hamilton Avenue has been identified as a high priority intersection on the Traffic Signal Priority List. Traffic Signal Installation at Newland and Hamilton.

The new signal will replace the existing traffic control, which is a stop sign for westbound Hamilton Avenue. The traffic signal will control all legs of the intersection and will include a protected-permissive southbound left turn arrow. Crosswalks will be provided across the north and east legs of the intersection. A radio unit and antenna will be installed to provide communication between this location and the City’s traffic signal master controller at City Hall. To install the traffic signal poles, minor roadway construction will be necessary.

At the southeast corner, the curb return will be reconstructed, shortening the radius from 25 to 22 feet, allowing for conformance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Along the westerly side of the intersection, there is currently no curb. An asphalt curb will be installed to properly place the signal poles. The project schedule is approximately 60 days.
