The outside front and back covers are actually an original painting of the beach and ocean in Huntington Beach by the author/artist, Dr. Gladys de Barcza. The pier, breaking surf, Catalina Island and an offshore oil rig form the backdrop for a bikini-clad sunbather on the backcover (above left). A little girl, lost in her world of sand-castle building, is on the front cover (above right).

Ecological Reserve This 300-acre coastal jewel must be saved as open breathing space for animals and humans. Wooden ramps cross the marshy water to make possible gazing at the wildlife and natural scenery. A waterfowl habitat with rain and groundwater ponds provides food and nesting areas for ducks and shore birds. Excellent views of undersea life include sea slugs the size of footballs, cruising stingrays and an occasional shark. HUNTINGTON BEACH: Now and Then is the third educational coloring book publication by Huntington Beach resident, Gladys de Barcza, Ph.D. This creation celebrates the Author's excitement in the renaissance of the community through numerous downtown redevelopment projects. Huntington Beach's attraction because of its surf, colorful history and cultural potential is outstanding compared to other seaside cities.
Dr. de Barcza has not always lived in Huntington Beach. Yet the depth of research for the texts and devotion to accuracy in the illustrations is far beyond the scope compared to other publications of this nature. Gladys has been an art educator in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Fiji Islands, not to mention New York City, Connecticut, Georgia, Pasadena, San Diego and of course- Huntington Beach. Teaching levels have ranged from grade one through university. Having an author with such a vast background qualifies HUNTINGTON BEACH: Now and Then to be for "Children of All Ages!"
Dr. de Barcza has organized and led art tours to Italy, the J.P. Getty Museum and many other cultural sites in a myriad of geographic settings. She had been the Director of Art Education at the former Modern Museum of Art, Santa Ana, CA and an honorarium lecturer at Newport Harbor Art Museum and American Samoa Community College, Pago Pago.
